The University of Nebraska - Omaha (UNO) Service Learning Academy has been learning and serving together with partners and providing faculty training, community partner development, and support for scholarship for service learning courses since 1999.
This preconference session will help attendees understand how quality professional development in service learning is implemented and supported at UNO with a special highlight on the P-16 Initiative, an innovative service learning program at UNO that provides training for both P-12 and UNO faculty members and partners to create collaborative service learning experiences.
In this model, P-12 students "see" themselves in higher education, students are heavily engaged in their learning, and communities are empowered by engagement from all partners. The session will take participants through a version of the training, outline assessment tools used, and include a community partner visit.

Pre-College Programming Workshop

The 2nd National Pre College and Youth Programming workshop will take place during the Engagement Scholarship Consortium pre conference sessions. Postsecondary institutions serve a valuable role in communities, not only by educating college students but also by providing a wide range of youth programming and access to universities. This workshop will explore ways in which universities and institutions, through youth programs, have had an impact on student decisions to enroll in postsecondary programs. Participants will discuss:
- Communicating with Parents/ Guardians
- Evaluation and Impact
- Standardizing forms and connecting resources
- Regulations/policies and creation of program handbooks
- Training & facilitating undergraduate students to be team leaders
- Addressing Mental Health, Youth Safety and other concerns for participants and facilitators of pre college programs
This workshop will provide insight and information about accessing resources, building networks, and utilizing best practices in evaluations, through exploration of successful programs across the United States. Throughout the day we will take an in-depth look at goals for pre-college programs, and their place in a university and community:
Making the Case:
- The need for pre-college programs
- Learning from the students
- Impact on students, community and the University
Pre-college Programs Are:
- designed to educate pre-college age students
- offered and delivered by university faculty, staff, and designated representatives
- intense in content level and intentional contact hours
- purposeful in exposing students to potential careers and academic programs on the university level
Evaluating and Impact:
- Discussion will focus on identifying measurable outcomes for pipeline programs and their effectiveness in transitioning students to be college ready and successful.
This workshop is intended for postsecondary education administrators, faculty, staff and graduate students; program directors and coordinators (GEAR UP, Upward Bound, Trios and alike programs); K-12 teachers, counselors and administrators; and community representatives interested in the role of pre-college and youth development programs.
All participants will receive a workbook and training materials to continue advancing their knowledge and skills.
Assessing University-Community Partnerships

Strong university-community partnerships bring about change for all who participate. That perceptible change comes through planning, doing, and reflecting, but can be challenging to assess and communicate.
This workshop will provide traditional and creative strategies for measuring and using the processes and outcomes of these projects. After this workshop, participants should know how to:
- Prepare a project logic model to guide assessment efforts
- Articulate processes and outcomes
- Select appropriate measures and evaluation designs
- Collect and analyze data
- Present and use results
This workshop is intended for faculty, staff, and administrators who wish to assess the processes and outcomes of their university-community partnerships. Experience levels from beginner (no experience with assessment) to intermediate (some experience with assessment) will find this workshop useful.
Participants will feel empowered to take the next steps in evaluating their university-community partnerships.
