Kellogg Award
The W. K. Kellogg Foundation Community Engagement Scholarship Award
Established in 2006, the W. K. Kellogg Foundation Community Engagement Scholarship Awards* and C. Peter Magrath Community Engagement Scholarship Award recognize four-year public universities that have made exemplary strides to become more closely and productively engaged with communities through their teaching/learning, discovery, and service activities.
Each year four regional nominees are competitively selected from submissions to an international call for nominations as recipients of the W. K. Kellogg Foundation Community Engagement Scholarship Awards, which are presented during the annual conference of the Engagement Scholarship Consortium (ESC). Each Kellogg Award recipient receives a sculpture, two complimentary registrations for the ESC Annual Conference, and $2,500 to support the production of a two-minute video “story” about their partnership and to defray expenses for travel to the conference. In addition to the four recipients, since 2011, the awards program has also recognized a small number of nominees as W. K. Kellogg Foundation Community Engagement Scholarship Award Exemplary Projects for their outstanding accomplishments.
Recipients of the Kellogg Awards qualify to compete as finalists for the C. Peter Magrath Community Engagement Scholarship Award presented by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) at its annual meeting. The Magrath Award, made possible by a grant from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, is named for C. Peter Magrath, who was APLU president from 1992-2005 and a leading advocate for public universities embracing the concept of outreach and community engagement. Recipients of the Magrath Award receive a sculpture and cash prize of $20,000. The three recipients of the Kellogg Award that are not selected to receive the Magrath Award each receive a cash prize of $5,000.
