University-based Engagement Offices
The following provides a list of the offices, centers, and other units that support community-engaged scholarship and university outreach at the member institutions of the Engagement Scholarship Consortium (ESC), as well as a brief description of each unit, including selected resources, based on information provided by each university's website.
Auburn University, Office of the Vice President for University Outreach
Auburn has a long history of service to Alabama's citizens, professionals, businesses, schools, and government through its outreach division. Auburn University actively encourages the engagement of its faculty and students in service to community. Website resources include: information on major programs and services; resources to enhance faculty outreach scholarship; and publications and reports.
Ball State University, Office of Community Engagement
The Office of Community Engagement is Ball State University’s front door for community partnerships in Muncie and Delaware County. The Office strives to connect university resources with community priorities and initiatives, resulting in more engaged faculty and students; greater prosperity for local residents, businesses, and organizations; and improved quality of life for all. It also provides administrative support for the Building Better Neighborhoods initiative, a partnership between Ball State University and the Muncie Action Plan that is funded by the Ball Brothers Foundation.
California State University - San Marcos, Community Engagement
Community Engagement at California State University - San Marcos is committed to building a stronger and more vibrant community by forging and growing strategic partnerships with a multitude of regional entities, and expanding its relationships with the larger community in general. It seeks to promote productive partnerships with its Tribal neighbors; military communities; school districts; Chambers of Commerce and other sectors of the business community; local government officials; and non-profit and community-based organizations.
Colorado State University, Office of Engagement
The Office of Engagement strengthens CSU's ability to achieve excellence in the areas of teaching and learning, retention and graduation, admissions and access, and outreach and service. The office also assists communities through rural outreach, scientific discovery, and regional research.
East Carolina University, Office of Community Engagement and Research
The Office of Community Engagement and Research leads pan-university efforts to connect the university with external partners. It focuses on professional development for faculty, staff, and students interested in engaged scholarship through a variety of programs that include the Engagement and Outreach Scholars Academy, SECU Public Fellows Internships, and Rural Innovations Strengthening Eastern NC-29. James Madison University, Outreach and Engagement
Outreach and Engagement serves as a catalyst by utilizing JMU resources to create mutually beneficial partnerships, advance educational opportunities, and empower individuals and our extended communities.
Kansas State University, Center for Engagement and Community Development
Engagement is core to Kansas State University’s value and identity as a public research land-grant university. Integrating engagement with research and education is part of the university’s plan to become a top 50 public research university by 2025. CECD will extend and expand this historic mission. It is a place where university faculty and community leaders can come together to address community challenges, meet community needs, and realize community dreams through effective scholarship-based engagement.
Michigan State University, Office of the Associate Provost for University Outreach and Engagement (UOE)
The Office of the Associate Provost for University Outreach and Engagement fosters MSU's land-grant mission by connecting university knowledge with community knowledge in mutually beneficial ways. UOE provides resources to assist academic departments, centers and institutes, and MSU Extension on priority issues of concern to society by encouraging, supporting, and collaborating with MSU faculty and academic staff to generate, apply, transmit, and preserve knowledge. This scholarship focus is applied to a broad range of community-defined needs, with special focus on: children, youth, and families; community-economic development; technology-human interface; and community health and well-being. Website resources include: initiatives and programs; documents such as reports, guides, proceedings; and information about learning opportunities. UOE is also home of the National Collaborative for the Study of University Engagement (NCSUE). NCSUE strives to be a preeminent innovator within the scholarly movement of engagement in higher education. NCSUE deepens the study of and discussion about two key principles—engaged scholarship and the scholarship of engagement—to inform and advance the national agenda. Its website resources include: benchmarking and measurement tools such as the Outreach and Engagement Measurement Instrument (OEMI); research and reports; curriculum on engagement for undergraduate students (Tools of Engagement). NCSUE also coordinates MSU'sa Graduate Certification in Community Engagement.
Montana State University, Service and Outreach
As Montana's land-grant institution, Montana State University is dedicated to serving the people of Montana. This service is provided primarily through education, research, and outreach. Though MSU continues to evolve to meet the state's most pressing needs, its dedication to service and outreach has remained central to its mission.
North Carolina State University, Office of Extension, Engagement & Economic Development (EEED)
EEED provides leadership and vision for University partnerships with external communities in the land-grant tradition. It engages NC State departments and partners to extend knowledge resource capabilities to improve North Carolina's economy and quality of life. NC State faculty, staff, and students work together with business, industry, government, other universities, individuals, and groups to address a wide range of issues and challenges facing the state and the world.

Ohio State University, Office of University Outreach and Engagement
Mutually beneficial partnerships and collaborations are central to both the definition of outreach and engagement and how the Office of Outreach and Engagement does its work. The Office exists to work in collaboration with faculty, staff, students, and units to enrich Ohio State's partnerships with the community and to embed outreach and engagement into colleges and departments. Website resources include materials that provide guidance for documenting engagement activities, and for discussing, developing, and/or evaluating outreach and scholarship.
Oklahoma State University, Outreach and Community Engagement
Oklahoma State University is a land-grant institution with a long history of commitment to active engagement with state, national, and international communities. OSU’s Extension and Engagement activities include: Family and Consumer Sciences; Human Sciences Outreach; the Consortium of African and United States Educators (CAUSE); and Sustainability. OSU’s International Outreach promotes international research, education, trade and development on behalf of Oklahoma State University and the state of Oklahoma through coordination of collaborative projects, outreach to state, national and international audiences; and the building of worldwide linkages.
Oregon State University, University Outreach and Engagement
Outreach and Engagement at Oregon State University enhances access to enrichment and problem solving through reciprocal relationships for the exchange of knowledge and resources in partnership with individuals, communities, business, industries, government, and educational institutions. Website resources include case studies highlighting some of the ways OSU faculty build partnerships with community organizations by providing access to their scholastic work in new and innovative ways.
Pennsylvania State University, Outreach
Outreach serves as a catalyst, collaborator, and connector to meet the needs of Penn State's various constituents and stakeholders with the programs, research, and services of the university's colleges and faculty. Penn State Outreach advances the University as the premier innovative, engaged institution of higher education in the country. It also enriches the lives of citizens and communities in the Commonwealth and beyond by mobilizing its partners and University resources and knowledge to address individual and social needs. Website resources include Penn State's Outreach magazine and links to resources for faculty, adult learners, communities, youth, and organizations.
Purdue University, Office of Engagement
Through the Office of Engagement, Purdue University uses its diverse resources to address issues affecting the prosperity and quality of life throughout the state and beyond. The Office is committed to partnering with the community and the state to work on economic development, enhancing education in schools, community service, lifelong learning, and the scholarship of engagement. Further, Purdue University is expanding its engagement mission to reach across the nation and the globe.
Texas Tech University, Office of Community Engagement
The mission of the Office of Community Engagement is to foster a college-achieving culture through programs, partnerships, and opportunities which serve the community, promote learning, encourage wellness, and inspire conversations about the value of higher education. The Office of Community Engagement serves as a nexus of Texas Tech University community engagement activities and creates reciprocal local, regional, state, and international partnerships through activities, resources, and support. Website resources include information on the Engaged and Integrated Scholar Lecture and Lunch Series, and K-12 outreach and engagement programs.
University of Alabama, Center for Community-Based Partnerships (CCBP)
The Center for Community-Based Partnerships is an initiative of the Office of Community Affairs. Its role is to connect faculty, staff, students, and community partners in research-based projects designed to solve chronic problems identified by communities. All academic disciplines are represented on a Council made up of campus and community members. The Council's various committees oversee project funding, conduct an awards program, publish a research journal, propose methods to integrate teaching and research, and seek outside funding, all with the goal of engaging communities and changing lives. Website resources include information on programs and initiatives as well as CCBP publications, including the Journal of Community Engagement and Scholarship (JCES).
University of Alberta, Faculty of Extension
The Faculty of Extension serves as a community portal, both to and from the University of Alberta, and is dedicated to lifelong learning activities that encourage and promote leadership, discovery, reflection, communication, and service. Website resources include Research Report 2010.
University of Colorado - Boulder, Office for Outreach and Engagement
The Office for Outreach and Engagement is a campuswide resource that supports CU Boulder's commitment to public outreach and community engagement. Since 2001, it has helped connect research, teaching and creative work with public needs across Colorado and beyond through programs, initiatives, resources, and services. The Office works closely with communities around the state, engaging with partners who inform and impact our research.
University of Georgia, Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach
UGA Public Service and Outreach enhances quality of life in Georgia by applying the knowledge of the University to the state's evolving economic, social, and community needs. Since the 1920s, Public Service and Outreach has been the University's ambassador to every corner of the state, translating the land-grant mission into programs and initiatives aimed at improving communities and the daily lives of Georgians. University of Minnesota, Office for Public Engagement
At the University of Minnesota, public engagement is the partnership of university knowledge and resources with those of the public and private sectors to enrich scholarship, research, and creative activity; enhance curriculum, teaching and learning; prepare educated, engaged citizens; strengthen democratic values and civic responsibility; address critical societal issues; and contribute to the public good.
University of Missouri-MU Extension
MU Extension is Missouri’s one-stop source for practical education on almost anything. Using science-based knowledge, University of Missouri Extension engages people to understand change, solve problems, and make informed decisions. MU Extension makes university education and information accessible for: economic viability; empowered individuals; strong families and communities; and healthy environments. University of Missouri Extension is a partnership of the University of Missouri campuses, Lincoln University, the people of Missouri through county extension councils, and the National Institute for Food and Agriculture of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
University of North Carolina - Wilmington, Office of Community Engagement
The Office of Community Engagement (OCE) provides an infrastructure for coordinated university-community engagement that builds on the interests and expertise of faculty, staff, students, and community members. Community engagement describes the institution's commitment to strengthen its local, regional/state, national, and global communities through meaningful partnerships, research, programs, and service.
University of Tennessee – Knoxville, Office of Community Engagement & Outreach
The Office of Community Engagement and Outreach (OCEO) coordinates and facilitates a broad and diverse set of community-campus partnerships. OCEO initiatives include: Engagement & Broader Impacts—resources to support campus outreach & successful broader impact components for grant proposals; Outreach Incentive Grants; W.K. Kellogg Foundation/C. Peter Magrath Engagement Award (UT’s annual submission for the regional & national awards); Pre-Collegiate Research Scholars Program; UT-REACH (weekly e-letter of engagement & outreach news, etc.); Harold Love Outstanding Community Service Award (annual award for faculty, staff and students); UTK Scholarships to National Outreach Scholarship Conference; and Public Engagement (the main website for the Office of Community Engagement & Outreach).
University of Texas - San Antonio, Office of the Vice President for Community Services
The mission of Community Services is to extend the University of Texas at San Antonio beyond its campuses and into San Antonio and South Texas through public service, extension, outreach and community education. This mission is accomplished through a variety of programs, including: Institute for Economic Development; Institute of Texan Cultures; Prefreshman Engineering Program (PREP); P-20 Initiatives; Office of Community Outreach; Office of Extended Education/Special Events; UTSA Mexico Center; and Child and Adolescent Policy Research Institute.
